Reimagining impact-related giving, Our Journey So Far.

Mon 17 May 2021

Too many honest hardworking American families struggle to make ends meets and, through no fault of their own, find themselves in serious financial trouble. According to The Population of Poverty USA, In 2018, 38.1 million people lived in Poverty USA. That means the poverty rate for 2018 was 11.8%. This means that in most cases, their incomes don’t allow them to meet basic needs, their hours are long and unpredictable, and they have no real ability to save for an emergency, let alone their futures. It was very clear in 2020, that existing solutions to meet peoples’ day-to-day financial needs were insufficient, often predatory, stressful to whole communities, and resulted in devastating financial and emotional costs. Families and communities are in urgent need of a safety net for times of financial stress.

This led the Team at True Given to ask the question:

“How do we reimagine impact-related giving?”

The Opportunity

We are at the right moment: The intersection of COVID -19 and more attention to the historic response of long-standing racial injustice has provided us with a unique opportunity to not only try out of box solutions, the willingness for people to change and adapt faster. As a result, the trend of strategic philanthropy around the country has been accelerated immensely. And so we can leverage this moment of acceleration to ensure the needs of LMI people — especially Black, Latinos, and Women — are integrated into powerful emerging technologies as they develop.

Our Idea

Creating a platform to support the communities by providing tools to raise, manage, and facilitate direct payments to individuals, families, and communities.

Where we are now

After thousands of hours of conducting qualitative and quantitative research (with LMI folks, foundations, social services organizations, nonprofits, and philanthropists), the team was able to synthesize the information and analyze insights to identify a suite of tools needed to effectively support communities.

From September 2020 — February 2021, the team ran an initial pilot test with a partner non-profit to understand the feasibility of providing cash grant funds. In collaboration with our partner, we designed, tested, and evaluated the True Given Platform that facilitated the fund request and distribution process with excellent results!

We are currently looking for amazing organizations to join our second pilot program.
